A hot and spicy blend from Ethiopia, Berbere is a spicy, sweet, and zesty blend that’s synonymous with Ethiopian cuisine. Made from super-fragrant herbs and spices like bell peppers, cinnamon, turmeric, fenugreek, cayenne, plus many more, Berbere brings the most wonderful, deep, and sumptuous flavors to this easy-to-make chicken dish.

Tender chicken thighs, tangy yoghurt, creamy cashews, and sweet currents, this all-in-one dish is so delicious and an Ethiopian twist on a classic one-pot wonder.

Spices used in this recipe


  1. Heat a large frying pan on the stove, add olive oil, and onions and saute 5min, then add garlic and zest or ginger and continue to saute for another 5 min till the onions start to caramelize.  Add the Ethiopian berbere spice mix and saute further 2 min. lower heat to medium.

  2. Add the chicken, and mix well to coat well with onion and spice mixture,  Saute  5 min to give a nice browning,  then add the tomato paste, yoghurt/ coconut milk (if using ) and chicken stock.
    The addition, of yoghurt will soften the flavours and reduce the heat slightly.

    Add optional  ingredients:
    raisins/ currants/ cashews/ spinach leaves
    Reduce heat to simmer and cook   10 min till chicken is cooked through.


  3. Serve with fresh coriander and rice .
