A Pepper with Centuries of History
The history of Kampot Pepper dates back to the Kingdom of Angkor, where pepper was prized as a valuable trading spice. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kampot had become one of the world's most renowned pepper-growing regions, with its pepper exported to Europe's finest restaurants and luxury markets.
Although production declined during Cambodia's years of conflict, dedicated farming families preserved their knowledge and traditions. Today, Kampot Pepper has regained its place among the world's finest spices and is protected by Geographical Indication (GI) status—an internationally recognised certification that guarantees every authentic peppercorn comes from the Kampot region and meets strict quality standards.
What Makes Kampot Pepper So Special?
Unlike mass-produced pepper, Kampot Pepper is grown on small family-owned farms using traditional methods passed down through generations.
Several factors contribute to its exceptional quality:
Fertile mineral-rich soils unique to the Kampot region.
A tropical climate balanced by cooling sea breezes from the Gulf of Thailand.
Sustainable farming practices with careful hand cultivation.
Every peppercorn is hand-harvested at precisely the right stage of maturity.
Naturally sun-dried to preserve its aroma and flavour.
This meticulous attention to detail produces a pepper unlike any other—one prized for its balance, fragrance and remarkable depth rather than simply its heat.
Why Is Kampot Pepper So Rare?
Authentic Kampot Pepper can only be grown within a small protected geographical area in southern Cambodia.
Unlike commercial pepper plantations that focus on high yields, Kampot producers prioritise quality over quantity. Every vine requires constant care throughout the growing season, and every harvest is completed entirely by hand.
Some varieties, particularly Red Kampot Pepper, are especially rare because the peppercorns must remain on the vine until they reach full ripeness. Only the finest berries are selected, making yields significantly lower than black pepper.
Combined with strict GI regulations and traditional farming methods, this makes Kampot Pepper one of the world's most exclusive and sought-after peppers.
All Kampot Pepper comes from the same vine (Piper nigrum), with each variety defined by harvest time and processing, creating distinct flavour profiles and uses.
